As society has figured out how get the population to approve taxation, we have adopted what is often called a Sin Tax or a Luxury Tax—that is, a tax on items you buy that are either luxury items or items that are associated with undesirable, or “sinful” behavior. Products like beer and cigarettes fall into this category. As of May 14, 2024, twenty states continue to charge sales tax on period products. The sales taxes, commonly called the “pink tax,” ranges from 4% to 7%. This is a protest piece, fundamentally rejecting the acceptance of menstruation to as either a sin or a luxury.
